A Beginners Guide to CBD Dosing

The secret to unlocking the benefits of CBD starts with understanding dosing. Dosing is the precise measurement of how much CBD you are taking per serving, and the right dose can make a difference in your experience. There is a lot to consider when trying to identify the perfect dose, but it's important to know that everyone is different and you will need to experiment to find what works best for you. We aggregated tips from a combination of medical research, customer feedback, and personal experimentation. This is not meant as a prescription, but rather a guide to help you maximize your CBD experience.
What determines how much CBD I should take?
Dosing CBD is almost always situational and has three primary factors.
Body Weight - The bigger you are, the more you will need.
Severity of Condition - A patient battling a chronic condition will need to take more than a stressed-out Mom.
Sensitivity and Previous Exposure to Cannabis - Everyone's body chemistry is tuned a little different and some people already have an established tolerance. If you're a frequent THC user, you'll need to take a little more CBD than someone who only smoked THC once in college.
What happens if I take too little?
You'll probably be disappointed and will not experience the benefits. Often times some people's first experience were with such low doses, that they stopped believing it can work for them.
What happens when I take too much?
The good news is that CBD is considered generally safe to consume and there are no reported "overdose" situations. If you take too much you'll get very sleepy or you may feel an elevated heart rate. It's unlike THC products where too much can leave you paranoid, hungry, and incapable of forming sentences.
How do I measure a "dose"?
it depends on the product, and we publish all dosing this is the breakdown:
- Oils
- One dose = One ml = One full dropper
- Each dropper will have tick marks as a guide every .25 ml
- Gummies
- One dose = One gummy
- All gummy packaging will explain how many mg of CBD exist in each piece)
- Smokable
- One dose = One pre-roll
- Each pre-roll will contain ~1 gram of flower material
- Topicals
- One dose = as much as you need to cover the affected area
- In most cases, a finger full of our lotions will be all you need
How long does a dose take to kick in and how long will it last?
It entirely depends on the method of use.
- Oral or Sublingual
- Sublingual means "under the tongue" and it's best to leave it under your tongue for 30-60 seconds to allow enough time to absorb into the blood vessels and mucus membranes
- Onset: 15-60 minutes
- Duration: 8-12 hours
- Ingestion
- Absorption will be slower, but the effect will last longer
- Onset: 30-120 minutes
- Duration: 10-14 hours
- Inhalation
- Fastest acting, but the effect dissipates faster
- Onset: Immediate
- Duration: 2-3 hours
- Topical
- Only products local effects and will not enter the bloodstream
- Onset: 5-15 minutes
- Duration: 4-6 hours
Remember: The timing of the effect can be influenced by weight, the severity of the condition, and sensitivity to Cannabis
This is all good, but how many milligrams of CBD should I take at a time?
If you speak to a physician, they will always recommend you titrate your dose. Titrating means to start low and gradually increase your dose over time. If you start low and gradually increase your dose, you will find your "sweet spot" and you will know how much you need for the desired effect
Regardless, everyone needs a starting point. Here is a chart that we would recommend when using Half Day products specifically. It never hurts to ask a physician if you're taking other medications or if you're pregnant or nursing.
Pounds (LBS) | Low Severity | Medium Severity | High Severity |
80 lbs | 10 mg | 20mg | 30 mg |
100 lbs | 15 mg | 25 mg | 35 mg |
