Three ways to use CBD with THC

Written by Diego Salinas

Whether you’re new to cannabis or a seasoned pro, you may still be wondering about how best to integrate CBD into your THC consumptions. Cannabis is now more accessible and safe to use than ever before. In fact, you’ve likely seen an uptick of CBD and hemp-derived products in your local stores and farmer’s markets. And lately, more and more THC users are introducing CBD into their daily routine.

The cannabis and CBD industries are moving faster than ever before and it might leave you asking yourself a couple of questions: How do you source the best product? What’s the best way to mix CBD with cannabis? And most importantly, how will it affect me? As a seasoned, responsible cannabis user I’m offering three great ways to introduce CBD into your cannabis routine. If you need a little breakdown about what CBD is, first, click here.

Why combine THC and CBD?

I love smoking cannabis. It’s fun, it relaxes me, and especially with everything going on nowadays, it’s a nice distraction. However, the increase of anxiety in my day-to-day life has started to creep into my personal time. I find that using CBD in combination with cannabis helps me enjoy my high while simultaneously alleviating some of the anxiety that may be exacerbated by THC alone.*

Combining THC edibles with CBD edibles

If you’re new to cannabis or simply prefer not to smoke to get high, consider pairing your pot brownie with a delicious CBD gummy. Edibles are a great way for new users to become familiar with the effects of both cannabis and CBD. Beginners can usually start off with anywhere from 2.5 to 10 mg of THC. This allows most people to feel the effects of cannabis. In general, my rule for THC edibles is to wait at least 30 minutes to an hour after my first dose before taking a second.

With CBD gummies you don’t have to worry about spacing out the doses, since CBD is non-psychoactive (i.e., it won’t get you high); like THC edibles, however, CBD edible will also take about 30 minutes to work their way into your system. This is because, unlike sublingual application or smoking CBD, edibles have a slower rate of absorption since the body has to begin to digest them before you feel the effects. Using CBD gummies along with your THC edibles makes your edibles last longer and the CBD can smooth out the rough edges of a THC edible experience—including reducing THC-induced paranoia or anxiety.

To get started mixing CBD and THC edibles, start off with your preferred dose of a THC edible, wait 20 minutes and then take a CBD edible. Continue with CBD edibles as needed throughout the high.

Combining flower (THC) and CBD tincture

While THC and CBD edibles are amazing and accessible, the downside is their delayed effect and lack of personal control over dosage. That’s why I love having a bottle of CBD tincture next to me when I’m smoking (THC that is). Not only can I control how much THC I’m taking in, but I can match that in real time with a CBD dosage from my tincture bottle. CBD tincture drops help make sure that my good vibes don’t slide into a funky slump without me noticing.

When it comes to tinctures, it can be hard to know exactly how much is in a dose. Make sure you’ve chosen a reputable CBD brand, and look for the number of milligrams (mg) per milliliter (ml). My tincture is 34mg/ml. Use this information to measure out on your dropper how much you should take (sidenote: if your CBD tincture doesn’t come with a measured dropper you need to find a new brand).

To get started with CBD during your smoking sessions, first take .5 ml of CBD tincture, then enjoy your preferred smoking method. I like to continue to take .25 ml of CBD tincture after every bowl I smoke after that.

Combining hemp/CBD flower with cannabis

Now comes the pièce de résistance, my absolute favorite way to incorporate CBD into my daily smoke sesh: The Half Day Joint—60% cannabis flower (THC) mixed with 40% hemp/CBD flower. After I was introduced to this method, I haven’t looked back. Not only do I get to enjoy the high from my premium THC bud, I also stay sharper, focused, and more relaxed thanks to the CBD flower.

CBD flower

If you can’t find quality CBD flower in your local smoke shops or dispensaries, there are some great options online to find everything from CBD flower prerolls to loose CBD flower. What’s great about smoking both flowers at the same time is that there’s no wait time for effects, and there’s a greater sense of balance and calm due to the way the CBD helps manage the THC high. Since I started smoking CBD with my THC I haven’t had any of the adverse reactions I’m usually wary of when I smoke cannabis on its own.

To mix CBD and THC flower, grind up your cannabis and CBD flower separately. Once you start rolling your joint ensure that the ratio of CBD to THC is how you like it. I prefer 60% cannabis flower and 40% CBD flower but you can adjust that as needed to find what’s good for you. Light up and enjoy!
